The first name given was East Tree, but it was changed to Gloucester after the visit from the Duke of Gloucester during the construction.

The Gloucester Tree tower is registered with the in the USA.

The tree has had 3 cabins on top. The original one lasted from 1946 till 1974 and was replaced by a steel/aluminimum structure. Then in 1987-88, the top of the tree was found unstable due to fungi. The tree was shortened and the current (2022) cabin installed.
